Maintaining dreadlocks from your own hair requires care and attention. After installing the dreadlocks, I will give you detailed maintenance advice to ensure that your dreadlocks stay healthy. Here are a few things you can pay attention to yourself:
Washing: Regular washing is important to remove dirt and oils, but don’t overdo it. Washing too often can dry out the dreads and hair. Use a mild, residue-free shampoo and make sure you rinse them well.
Drying: Let your dreads dry well after washing and preferably wash your hair at the beginning of the day. Wet hair can cause mold if it does not dry properly. If necessary, use a hairdryer on the lowest setting.
Avoiding residue: Avoid products that leave residue such as wax and gels. Also be careful with dyeing, this can build up and weigh down the dreads. It is important to rinse well.
Maintenance appointments: Consider regular visits to a dread specialist, friend, family member or teach yourself how to do maintenance. This way, any loose hairs can be reattached and you can keep your dreadlocks tidy and healthy.
Pay attention to tightness and tension: Be careful when dreads are tight or pulling on the scalp after a touch-up. It should not be too tight and cause ‘bumps’, as this can damage the hair root.

During a professional touch-up session, I will be busy crocheting the loose hairs at the regrowth and frizz, but also filling in or joining dreadlocks if necessary. The touch-up takes between 2 and 4 hours, but this depends on the condition and amount of dreadlocks you have.
